limiting beliefs

Let’s talk about something that quietly holds more people back than almost anything else — limiting beliefs.

You might not even realize you have them. They’re sneaky like that. They show up as thoughts that feel completely true, completely logical, completely just the way things are. But here’s the thing — they’re not facts. They’re stories you’ve been telling yourself, often for years, and it’s time to rewrite them.

What exactly are limiting beliefs?

In plain language, a limiting belief is anything you believe about yourself that limits what you think you’re capable of. It sounds like this:

“I’m not smart enough.” “I don’t know how to do that.” “I can’t see myself doing that.” “I’m not worthy of that.” “I don’t deserve better.”

Sound familiar? These thoughts feel like truth. They feel like self-awareness. But what they really are is a cage — and you’ve been living inside it without even realizing the door was never locked.

I know this firsthand

Before I became a life coach, I spent 24 years working at a police department. Every single day I was helping people — navigating crisis, finding solutions, figuring things out under pressure. And yet when the idea of becoming a life coach came up, my immediate thought was “I don’t have the background for that. Who am I to coach anyone?”

Twenty-four years of helping people — and I couldn’t see it as a qualification.

That’s what limiting beliefs do. They take your greatest strengths and make them invisible to you.

What changed everything for me was hiring my own life coach. I didn’t know what I wanted to do next, and I needed help figuring it out. The more I worked with him, the more I understood something important — my calling was to help people. It always had been. I just needed someone to help me see what was already there.

How to identify your limiting beliefs

Start by paying attention to your inner critic. When you think about a goal or a dream, what’s the first negative thought that comes up? That’s usually a limiting belief trying to keep you safe — or small.

Some common ones I hear from clients:

  • “I’m too old to start over.”
  • “I’m not educated enough.”
  • “People like me don’t get to do things like that.”
  • “I’ve already failed at this before.”

Write them down. Getting them out of your head and onto paper is the first step to seeing them for what they are — stories, not facts.

The “What If / What Then” technique

One of my favorite tools for helping clients break through limiting beliefs is what I call the “What If / What Then” approach. It goes like this:

Take your limiting belief and ask:

“What if I were smart enough? What then?” “What if I weren’t smart enough? What then — because I could always get more education.”

You keep asking “what if” and “what then” until you get to the real fear underneath the belief. Because most of the time, the limiting belief isn’t actually about what it seems to be about. It’s about fear of failure, fear of judgment, fear of success — or all three.

Here’s something I notice with almost every client — when they ask “what if,” they almost always go to the negative. “What if I fail?” But they rarely stop to ask “What if I fly?” We are so conditioned to protect ourselves from the worst case that we forget to even imagine the best case. What if it actually works out? What if you’re more capable than you think? What if this is exactly what you’ve been waiting for?

Once you name the real fear, you can work with it. You can’t fight something you can’t see.

What happens when you break through

When a client releases a limiting belief — and I mean really releases it — something visible shifts. Their confidence changes. They start seeing themselves differently, in a more positive light. They stand a little taller. They start talking about their goals like they’re possible instead of like they’re dreams for someone else.

It’s one of the most powerful things I get to witness as a coach.

And here’s what I want you to know — that shift is available to you too. You are not your limiting beliefs. You are not the story you’ve been telling yourself. You are so much more capable than you’ve allowed yourself to believe.

The door was never locked. You just needed someone to show you that.
